Great piece of work here, as it doesn't crash or lock up my system like others have in the past. It is very simple and doesn't eat resources. My only request, maybe add html linking when sent via chat. That way there you can just click the link and it will open automatically in your browser!! Good job, and thank you for the work!!!

A SlackWare 10.2 Package with SlackBuild script is ready to download!! http://www.slacky.it/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=1&func=fileinfo&filecatid=784&parent=category

geflei

Thanks, I added the link in the download section.

Hi! smbclient prints: message start: ERRSRV - ERRmsgoff (Not receiving messages.) So, neither klinpopup works. How can I solve this. On both computer is linux installed.

geflei

Hmm, first time I see this error message. I found no way to reproduce it. Both machines running linux and I assume the samba servers are running and are configured (message command = ...)? Other stupid question - a firewall? Unfortunately even google doesn't give much information. :-( What samba version and distribution are you running?

kriko

I'm using suse 10, 1st computer has firewall, which ports should I open?

geflei

In the YAST samba server configuration is a checkbox to open the firewall for samba. For manually editing the ports are 137, 138. Good luck, Gerd

kriko

Already did that, but still it doesn't work. What else can I try? I can't find any suitable solutions via google.

geflei

You could try turning the firewall of completely. Maybe reinstall samba? Update with YOU to 3.0.20b. I'm using SUSE 10 too without such problems. Does the lan browsing e.g. with smbclient -N -L localhost or "master" work? Are there at least a samba root user? Do you have any "unusual" options in smb.conf? If nothing helps you could add the debug = 10 option to your smb.conf and search in the logs for an error.

kriko

Lan browing works: kriko@linux:~> smbclient -N -L localhost Domain=[ACME] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.20-4-SUSE] Sharename Type Comment --------- ---- ------- profiles Disk Network Profiles Service users Disk All users groups Disk All groups print$ Disk Printer Drivers IPC$ IPC IPC Service (Samba 3.0.20-4-SUSE) ADMIN$ IPC IPC Service (Samba 3.0.20-4-SUSE) Domain=[ACME] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.20-4-SUSE] Server Comment --------- ------- Workgroup Master --------- ------- TUX-NET ACME WORKGROUP CLUSTER but I don't know how to add a root user to samba. I'll try to set debug = 10, then we'll see. I cannot upgrade via you (too heavy update for dial-up)

Ehy! But.... this app looks like KPopup!!! Is the updated version of KPopup?

geflei

Well, some kind of. I started with a merge of KPopup and a XML-GUI template. I learn/practice C++ with it and implemented some things what I found useful. The layout of KPopup is IMHO already very good and I kept it. Greetings, Gerd

Hi geflei, just wondered what is the linux equivalent to the dos "net send" command ?

geflei

Use the source, Luke. (or Google) ;-) smbclient -M machine (-U user -N) Greetings, Gerd

Thankyou for this great program. I have translated it into Norwegian (Bokmål). http://www.thehandofagony.com/alex/klinpopup_0.14_nb/nb.po.bz2

shadowrm

this is your first program? AWESOME WORK! i don't know what you did to it, but it kicks some serious arse! at least it doesn't crash on me like kpopup does -- and just excellent layout and options. programs like this _IS_ what will continue to drive linux to be better than windoze! i look forward to future releases - good job!

henschel

Hi shadowrm, ich think you haven't understand Linux! Only if the Linux user send problems/error or features request to the maintainer or fix the problem self, Linux will be better. Your comment that kpopup crash always on your computer is ok, BUT I don't now about this problem! I hope you will learn more about Linux and the community. The programmer of kpopup

shadowrm

first off you need to understand the linux community yourself - i just gave this guy a complement on his excellent work, which if thats in question then you have some serious issues. secondly, i never really liked kpopup because of lack of features - this is _MY_ personal preference, which is _EXACTLY_ what linux is about - if i don't like something, sure, i can request something from the person who originally created the program like yourself which i've done numerous times on this forum however, i didn't and something better than your program did come along, so what? i like the over all feel of this one better than yours, so what? that is _MY_ preference, and thats what linux is all about - if i wanted everything the same i'd use windoze! if you seriously took my comment as an attack against your program well then, all apologies, but in honesty -- thats like me telling the KDE developers i like firefox better than konqueror -- well, what do you think the developers of KDE are going to do? get all huffy at me because i like mozilla? i seriously doubt it. if you notice my previous comment it says "programs like this _IS_ what will continue to drive linux to be better than windoze!" it DOES NOT say that this program will trample over kpopup! you have a descent product and i respect that, but i'm sorry that someone else in the linux community made something better and _I_ happen to like it. truely, shadowrm

henschel

Hi shadowrm, what I mean is. Me irks, because you wrote that kpopup crashed and klinpopup is better. But I havn't a really chance to make kpopup better, because you doesn't sent this problem(s)! I haven't a problem that other peoples use my sourcecode, because I use the GPL for kpopup! I haven't also a problem that other peoples creates a better tool for sending messages! I hope you understand now my sentence "that you not understand linux community" Regards Torsten

shadowrm

actually i understand your comment but i also understand the linux community greater than what you think --- the reason for me not reporting errors or requesting features is simply because i have no real need/use for these types of programs, however, i do test new programs and updates all the time to see if i might be able to use these on a day-to-day basis. for yours its only every now and then. which was stated in the previous comment, "which i've done numerous times on this forum however, i didn't". once again though, i'm sorry i choose to use a different program, as stated before, that's the point of linux, choice. sorry i happened to single out your product - however, isn't that why you released it under the GPL? so others could make it better? or to learn from? if not why even release it as open source? so why accuse me when i say that his is better? i respect the work you put into your program, but i also respect his and i think you should too -- after all, it is your work that he's using! and i feel it deserves a damn good comment! don't you? ;-) lets just leave it at that and call us friends, ok? :D truely, shadowrm

henschel

Ok Friends ;-) Regards Torsten
