Description:
I modified the KWord 1.5.1's toolbar to match closely with MS Word 2000 toolbar. It is definitely meant for MS Word users who have switched to KDE/KOffice and find KWord toolbar difficult to use (because of their familiarity with MS Word toolbar). Hope this will make KWord experience more fun and comfortable. thanks and have fun!

With Version 2.2, I have Added/Modified some useful msword shortcuts without disturbing KWord's default shortcuts (except ctrl+r, ctrl+e) which are common to MS word, SWriter, Textmaker, etc.

Important: KDE Applications printing is bad, if you want to print with any KDE application you
should see this:

Last changelog:

2.2: Added MSWord Shortcuts, Especially the Right (Ctrl+R), Center (ctrl+e), Replace (ctrl+h) was very comfortable for MSWord users which were different for kword from openoffice and microsoft office, textmaker also.

Added/modified Shortcuts are:

Ctrl+E for Center Alignment
Ctrl+R for Right alignment
Ctrl+M for increase indent
Ctrl+Shift+M for decrease indent
Ctrl+[ for increase font size (1 point)
Ctrl+] for decrease font size (1 point)
Ctrl+Shift+F for choose font
Ctrl+H for Replace

Ctrl+Alt+N for Standard Formatting
Ctrl+Alt+` for Document Title
Ctrl+Alt+1 for Heading 1
Ctrl+Alt+2 for Heading 2
Ctrl+Alt+3 for Heading 3
Ctrl+Alt+4 for Alphabetical list
Ctrl+Alt+5 for Bullet List
Ctrl+Alt+6 for Enumerated List
F7 for Spelling/Spellcheck
Ctrl+Shift+C for Text Background Color
Ctrl+Shift+T for Text color

2.1: Added 3 new toolbar actions,
a) "Link..." which can add hyperlink/mail/contact into kword document.
b) "Document Structure" - Shows the Document structure on the Left side (which is by default enabled with kword configuration)
c) "Show Formatting Characters" useful when you want to know where extra space or unnecessary tabs are entered.
also included the icons (if missing on your system)
2.0: Only 2 toolbars (File and Format) are used for all the toolbuttons. Koffice(file) toolbar, copied to kword.rc and it becomes file(kword) toolbar which can include other toolbuttons of edit menu, format menu etc.. Now only 2 toolbars with all the required toolbuttons make it look even better. Thanks David Faure, Thomas Zander you've done a great job with KWord!
1.2: Manually modified kword.rc to move undo, redo after cut, copy, paste, and moved spellcheck after print-preview, same as ms word toolbar. removed my Recent Document list from kwordrc
1.1: removed the strike-through formatting (very rarely used button) for more MS Word toolbar look and feel.
1.0: first release.

i talked at the linuxweek in austria/vienna with one koffice developer. he told me, that up to version 2 of koffice there will be much more changes to koffice 1.5 so that it will be the most comfortable office suit on the market. he also told me, that that there will be many changes to bring koffice under the topmost used office suits. i think in general that koffice will be in the near future the most useable office suit for private and office! hope that they will do their work well.

Why should this be the default style? Is MS Word so good. No, Never. Voted bad. Sorry

it seems that it's not your reason but your hate towards microsoft telling that. Just look at OOwriter, Swriter, Textmaker, Abiword, and other Word Processors, you'll find Similar interface to MSWord. KWord's toolbar is different and pretty unfamiliar compared to other Wordprocessors as users who's been using other word processor tries to use kword will find it absolutely annoying. Kword toolbars are too many which can be included in 1 toolbar is provided in 3-4 toolbars (font, paragraph, formatting, file). that's bad looking. Also look at KSpread toolbar and MSExcel toolbar, you'll be surprised that KSpread Toolbar is almost identical to MS Excel. really! > Voted bad Thanks. appreciate that. BTW, did you try this, before commenting? or just jumped to conclusion, "if it's microsoft then it's evil!!!" ;)

I like it a lot. I like the layout of OOo, but I don't like that it isn't integrated with kde all the way (you can change the icons to crystal, but they won't change with the current iconset; also, ooo requires plugins to integrate even part of the way with kde. KOffice is fully integrated). I would use KOffice, but I hate the jumbled up look of the toolbars. --Ioannus de Verani

>Is MS Word so good. No, Never. Yes, it already is. want a list...? here it is: 0. Neat Interface: Start MS Word, and start typing. Start KWord and you are welcomed with an UGLY looking "Create Document" dialog. The very first impression matters! 1. Printing: MS Word Prints a lot better than KWord (because KDE print system don't know how to use postscript fonts for true type fonts). Advantage: MS word documents look prettier on Paper! Kword documents sucks! 2. Formatting: Paragraphs can be divided into column. There's no such option in kword. Though oowriter has it. 3. Copy/Paste: Copying pasting from Internet Explorer to MSword will *retain* every bit of formatting. Whereas KWord loses all formatting which is copied from Konqueror. oowriter+firefox is better. Advantage: MS Word/ OOWriter saves your time and effort. KWord makes you work longer and harder. 4. MS Word/ OOwriter can work with documents with HUNDREDS of pages. KWord cries/stalls when you open a big document with images and large number of pages. KWord is inefficient! Even KWrite will handle huge documents! Need more..? Try MS Word and discover yourself. Even with these GRAVE Bugs/Missing features, I still love KWord! I want KOffice to supercede MS Word and Openoffice.org in features and functionality. be realistic, don't dream dude!

Either way, this ia a GREAT job, thank you for doing this. I feel this is a great step in helping making KDE and our repsective distros a viable desktop solution/replacement. While some people cringe at any similariities to other Desktops/Software, I feel anything that helps people migrate over as good thing, and this clearly does that. Kudos, Sir, my hat is off to you. Thank you.

ibc

Of course, or the user can modify the toolbar buttons... or recompile it. The problem is exactly how Kword looks by default, don't you think?

ibc

In fact I don't know how MS Word looks (maybe long time ago...), but I like your toolbar more that the toolbar by default of Kword. Yesterday I was using Kword and it costed me a lot to change the font size because there is not an icon or field for that in the toolbar and I must go to the menu or right click.

maarizwan

That's exactly the reason I started modifying the KWord toolbars. Paragraph toolbar, format toolbar, font toolbar, all are just scattered. It was causing me difficulty to format and work with documents. So, I attempted some copying of M$ Word toolbar layout which is very well thought of and usability wise is pretty good.

tminos

Minor note: if you really want to closely follow MS Word, you may want to remove (from KWord) the strike-through icon; it's not in your screenshot of Word.

maarizwan

right, but i don't wanna make it dumb, if someone wants to use strikethrough, he'll be in difficulty. The idea is to make it easier for both KWord and MSWord users.

maarizwan

on a second thought, it seems that strike-through is not used frequently, and also it makes kword toolbar look good. will fix that in version 1.1. thanks though.
