I think you mean best distro too because it use best OS what is GNU/Linux? ;-) Debian != Operation System Debian = GNU/Linux Distro GNU/Linux = Operation System ;-)
That's a great-looking wallpaper! I am quoting the front page of the debian.org website: "Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; hence the name GNU/Linux." This has been up on the page for quite a long time. Debian is a pretty deliberate group, and I doubt they would say "Debian is a free operating system (OS)..." unless Debian really is an OS. However, I am simply a user, not a programmer, lawyer, or philosopher-king. I just thought I would point out where people might get such ideas. Bryan =)
thx :D debian is a completely free OPERATING SYSTEM. ^^
Yes, Debian is a completely FREE. Because Debian wont allow any non-open code to get in it's distro. Debian still is just Distro among others. It use same OS as all other distros. Only thing what makes it different is it is different distro. Not OS ;-) If you want different OS than SUSE. Then you need to take Debian GNU/Hurd and then it would be other operation system than SUSE GNU/Linux. But most important thing is that users knows what difference is with distro and OS and why two distros (like suse and mandriva) ain't different OS but just different distros. It's so simple as that. There is one OS what is GNU/Linux and then there is other what is GNU/Hurd and then there is windows and MacOSX etc. Then there are different windows in that OS family (vista, XP, w2k etc) and then there are different distros about GNU/Linux OS. GNU/Linux itself belongs to *nix alike OS family where are BSD's too. That's why Debian isn't other OS as other distro is. It is Free OS (as distro) among other OS's (windows, MacoSX etc).
"and I doubt they would say "Debian is a free operating system (OS)..." unless Debian really is an OS." And yes, there would not be a reason to say that debian isn't a OS. Because OS needs two part. It needs Kernel (linux) and OS platform (GNU) and linux is needed to get OS platform work with hardware, that's why they like it to be called as GNU/Linux and not just Linux. And like all GNOME/KDE desktops... they dont belong to OS because OS dont need them. OS just need to allocate memory, share CPU time to process etc etc. And debian is absolutly free, as i told, it dont use any non-free code as Ubuntu does what is fork of debian. And Debian/SUSE version differens only that SUSE you can buy version what includes non-free code what you cant just download. And that's why SUSE is 'non-free' distro on those parts where Debian is totaly free, so totaly free as bier GNU/Linux OS ;-)
